Noise removal for Zoom, Meet, and Teams recordings

Meeting audio is rarely “bad”—it’s compromised: fan hiss, room reflections, laptop mics, and aggressive automatic gain. The goal is intelligibility, not podcast perfection.

Start with capture discipline

The best noise removal is less noise. Ask presenters to wear headphones, mute when not speaking, and avoid typing on the same mic path. If you control recording, capture system audio separately from the mic when the platform allows—cleaner stems make editing kinder.

A conservative processing order

  1. Noise reduction first (gentle). Learn the profile from a silent slice with only room tone—never from speech.
  2. High-pass thoughtfully. Remove rumble without turning voices thin; aim to kill HVAC sub-bass, not personality.
  3. Control dynamics. Light compression keeps remote speakers level when they lean away from the mic.
  4. De-click if needed. Laptop mics pick up mouth clicks and keyboard spikes; treat only what you hear repeatedly.

The “underwater” failure mode

If voices sound phasey or swallowed, you removed too much noise or applied two aggressive passes. Undo one stage, reduce strength, and compare on laptop speakers—not only on studio headphones.

When music is underneath

If someone plays background music while speaking, noise tools can mistake music harmonics for noise. In those cases, duck music under speech, or replace music with a licensed bed you control.
